The Last French Canadian + Q&A

As part of Mois de la Francophonie 2026, I popped to the Institut Français d'Écosse to watch the short documentary ‘The Last French Canadian’.

The documentary mirrors the quick tempo of its presenter Pascal Justin Boyer’s french language, mixing humour, archival footage, and candid conversations. The film explores whether preserving the idea of being “French Canadian” risks stripping the label of its “Canadian” part altogether, leaving Boyer to ask what exactly he hopes to defend.

The film went at a very fast pace and I managed to keep up with it. It was fun, light and it brought out the personality of its main character.

There was a Q&A at the end with the presenter Pascal Justin Boyer and producer Isabelle Corriveau.

It was an enjoyable night and I praised the film over a few glasses of wine and onion bhajis,
